The Greeks use of Scent.

The ancient Greeks revered the scented plants and believed they were created by the Gods and Goddesses so that the scents given purposes could be utilised. Carnation, roses, myrtle, cardamom, marjoram and iris were just some of the plants and flowers they used.

All scents represent an aspect of physical health. Everything had its use, houses were built just so each path could open onto purposely designed herb and flower gardens.

Roses were crowned around their heads to prevent intoxication and headaches. White violet was used to cure stomach ailments. They encouraged the use of Grape leaf to clear the head. For the Greeks Rose was so important that it was added to nearly every mixture of wine based perfumes that were popular at the time.

Orris root was also very popular because of its attractive violet fragrance. Versatile in its uses it had been the base of many European powdered perfumes, and even been used to make the beads in rosaries. The vast amounts of Greek perfumes were carried Aryballos , these were formed into a vast array of shapes from animal shapes to a Gorgons head. Usually with a wide mouth but a narrow neck, aiding the perfume to be poured slowly. These were mainly made in Corinth where over time they were produced in smaller sizes. Later, when the Roman civilisation grew to greater prominence, they were so impressed by the perfumes that the famous Roman Cosmus became a top perfumer.

No longer content that things should just look good, the wealthier Romans eventually had mattresses stuffed full with roses and insisted that their bridal chambers were strewn with large handfuls of rose petals. Nero, the Roman emperor was even known to have had Lake Fucina covered with rose petals when he threw a huge feast there.
