How Scent Affects us Physically.
When we inhale a scent we absorb it through the sensitive skin in the nose and lungs, this creates an effect on us both physically and emotionally.
When inhaling an essential oil the molecules are passed through the lungs and into the bloodstream through hairy air sacs. The aroma is initially inhaled into the upper nasal cavity where olfactory cells are located under a thin layer of mucus. The olfactory cells have fine protrusions which different where different scents attach themselves into the different receptors that they match.
When an aromatic finds the correct receptor a signal of recognition is passed from the olfactory nerve to the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system is the part of the brain used to process instinctive responses, whether adrenaline, memory, situation or scent driven. It is also linked to the pituitary gland which has important functions of balancing hormones within the body. Together these create the immediate response of whether a scent is pleasing to us and how our bodies and minds react.
Whether it is food or perfume, every aroma can remind us of things in our past in either a positive or negative way and the instinctive part of the human brain will help us position a scent very quickly according to those feelings.
Essences that dont emit a pleasing effect will certainly have a negative effect on your mood and general sense of being, whereas a positive scent could ease a wide range of ailments just by lifting your positivity.
