Restructuring Our Business Model - Improving Value For Customers.
1 August 2009
At I Conjure we are in the process of a major restructuring of our business model. We are doing this in response to the current economc trend, with the aim of stimulating growth and widening our market appeal. We are making alterations to our product range so that our brand is more visually distinctive and a more affordable product without losing the high standard of quality we have become known for.
The first change we are making is to alter our packaging. We are moving away from the white cylinder to a two-piece black card box. We will be keeping our logo the same on the packaging. Our glass containers are being replaced with straight sided red glass containers. They will be branded with our logo and the candles name. We feel that these changes will strengthen our brand image.
We have reduced our range of candles from 14 down to 9. This slimlining will make our manufacturing process more efficient and will remove the least popular lines and the most expensive to produce, thereby enabling us to reduce the retail cost of our candles. The reduced range will consist of; Armour, Ego, Gilt, Immune, Off, Removal, Repair, Them and Us.
Through continued improvement we have been able to extend the burn time by 20% to an approximate 60 hours. Our candles will have a new retail price of £22.
For the smaller budget, and ideal for any girl or boy who just can't seem to make their mind up, we are also introducing a new bespoke range named "My Desires", which includes two 14 hour candles from an extended range of 13 candles. So if your confidence is low, why not marry the fiery temperament of "Ego" extra confidence with the citrus floral tones of "Armour" extra protection. Or if you are recovering from a break up, the gentle restoring "Repair" with the relaxing and emotionally balancing "Level". The names of the full range of 13 My Desires candles are; Armour, Clean, Cure, Ego, Fire, Gilt, Immune, Level, Off, Removal, Repair, Them and Us. Our My Desires candles will have a retail price of £15 for two 14 hour candles.
We will be launching these changes at the end of August.

I Conjure, About The Company - Press Release
1 June 2009
Why Ethical?
We are all well aware of the Earths limited resources. Most candles for sale in the UK are made from paraffin wax which is made from crude oil, so while we are trying to reduce the amount of fuel we use in our cars, we should also avoid using petroleum based candles. Even with soy based candles it isn't as simple as it seems. Although it is a renewable source, it needs to be sourced from ethical suppliers. Much of the worlds soy is grown in South America. The Amazonian Rainforest is often cleared to grow soy beans. Where it is grown on land that has already been cleared in the rainforest, it often replaces more labour intensive farming like cattle ranching. This leads to greater unemployment in the indigenous population. We source our soy wax from America, where it is grown in a sustainable way by an industry that has highly regulated labour laws.
Our essential oils are sourced as locally to the UK as possible. This means less air miles to create our candles and as most are sourced in the EU, the farmers and workers that produce them are protected, ensuring a fair wage.
Why Perfume Scents?
At I Conjure we use perfume blended essential oil scents which requires the careful balancing of the notes to create a balanced bouquet. We aim to give a superior alternative to the simplistic one and two scent based candles available elsewhere.
Each scent of essential oil has its own note, just like music. Each note must be in harmony with all the others to create a bouquet like a well tuned orchestra. It takes time and patience to blend the right notes in the right quantities to create a symphony of scents that compliment each other. Our complex scents have up to ten different essential oils, which takes a lot longer to blend than the usual one or two scents.
Why Ritual Oils?
Over time the societies of Western nations have generally lost touch with nature in their everyday lives. In our society even medicines based on plants are now manufactured in a clinical way. In times past and in less industrialised societies, plants are still used as the first choice for combating ailments. With these inherent qualities they have been thought of in the highest terms. Most modern world religions still incorporate burnt offerings to their gods as part of normal worship. Different plants have different properties associated with them and are used to create change in those areas. They are also used to create a closer spiritual connection with deities and spirits.
It has become popular to produce candles with the added feature of having a purpose. We use ancient recipes for rituals to give a deeper purpose for our candles. The easiest way to use our candles purpose is to just light one and enjoy the scent. If you want to focus more on the purpose you can create a simple ritual, meditation, or visualisation to do whilst using the candle. There are suggestions for these on our webpages.
Why Natural?
There are many benefits to using natural ingredients over traditional petroleum based waxes and chemical fragrances. Natural soy wax and beeswax don't give off the toxins associated with paraffin wax, making them healthier for you and the planet. Essential oils have been around and used in perfumery long before their lower priced chemical equivalents, fragrance oils were invented. Essential oils are the refined parts of plants where as fragrance oils are chemical approximations. For ritual, meditation or aromatherapy use, essential oils are the only choice and cannot be faked. Properly farmed, natural ingredients are renewable and benefit local growers and producers rather then multinational oil companies.
When burnt, our natural candles have a slow burn because of the soy wax's lower melting point and burn for a lot longer than an equivalent paraffin candle. The biggest difference comes when you smell the natural scents. They have an entirely unique tone when lit compared to paraffin wax candles. The gentle scent that can easily fill a room lacks the pungent, acrid undertone of paraffin wax.

I Conjure Founder, Anna Squires
15 March 2009
I am a mother of two growing teenage daughters, which with running I Conjure means my life is almost non stop. I work hard to keep a balance between the attention I give to the business and my daughters. I am fortunate to be able to rearrange my work to spend time with my daughters, even if it means having to work late to keep on top of it. The business grew from my love of herbs and their uses. This love of herbs led on to using essential oils and making blends for different uses. I use these blends for minor ailments and to enhance moods. I found that making them into candles was an easy way to keep a blend and release it slowly into a room. Soon I had friends demanding that I made some for them and that gradually grew into a part time business selling them locally at craft fairs and markets. This has grown to an online business where we now deliver across the UK.
I am motivated mostly by my work. I find that the products I make give a real sense of satisfaction from the begining stages of developing new bouquets to the final stages of checking the scents of each candle before they are sent out. I really believe in the candles being the best I can produce without having to compromise on my beliefs about ethical and ecological business practices and this helps me feel I am making a small but definate difference.
I admire Coco Chanel for her attitude and business accumen. I find it encouraging that she was able to grow her business from the ground up by focusing on the highest standards of quality. She maintained as much personal control over the blending and selecting of her perfumes rather than letting that control be given to others as her business grew. Even through all the business adversity she encountered along the way, her determination to retain control and independance, and maintain her image of quality made her become the legend she is.
I enjoy the variety of aspects of running a business entails. The creative side of making new scents, designing artwork for promotional material and writing copy are the first things that come to mind, but the idea that each day has a new project to deal with or even the more everyday tasks that need to be done means there is always a lot to think about and sort out. That variety stops it from becoming mundane.
There is nothing quite like producing a product that people enjoy and when you get comments about them you get a little bit of a thrill.
Often the most challenging part is organising other people to deal with the things that are technically beyond my capabilities. I have to rely on outsourced IT help to deal with any problems or improvements to my website and systems. I am lucky to have good help but it can be frustrating to get someone else to fully understand your needs.
I was brought up and have always been a strict vegetarian. I was brought up to be aware of enviromental and ethical issues and so its not really been a choice to work ethically and ecologically, more a case of doing what I naturally feel to be right. I guess one of the early signs that I was going to be involved in making natural scents was making my own rose water as a child. I have always avoided products produced in ways that aren't ethical or have been tested on animals. I believe it is very important that manufacturers have clarity on what products and ingredients they use. This is why I list the ingredients of my candles and don't use additives. I choose my ingredients not only on quality but also on their origin. I also want people to understand that the choices I make in the process of producing my candles and in the day to day running of the business are of similar standards. We have green hosting on the website and aim to recycle and reuse products and packaging sent to us, which we hope will inspire our customers to do the same.

I Conjure Press Release
1 March 2009
Set up in Bath, Somerset in January 2009 by a single mother of two teenage daughters, Anna Squires. I Conjure Candles was formed when Anna found out that the fragrance candles she loved were filled with such chemicals as lead, cadmium and acetone, dangerous cocktails that when burned affected her, and more worryingly, her daughters health. Having always used pure essential oils to help charge her emotions and physiology, and having an interest in oils used in history, she decided to combine the two and spent nine months researching historical recipes.
Determined that her company would be run with good practices, she decided that none of her candles would contain additives, and she would use only pure soy wax with a hint of beeswax, which not only looks pleasing, but due to its cool burning, doesn't distort the beautiful bouquet. 100% pure cotton wicks and only recycled packaging and glass are used and that all the ingredients would be from ethical sustainable sources.
Anna says, "I wanted our candles to be more than something that you light and just put in the corner of the room. I wanted them to be accessible for when the customer needed to change their mood and circumstances. Whether they just basked in the scents like our ancient ancestors did, or for the more spiritual person, practising the visualisation. We purposely use more essential oils for a more instant scent for our customers when they need that change. Not only does this save time for somebody with a busier modern life, but the candle doesn't have to be lit for long which makes the candle last much longer and better value for money."
