Candle hazard
If you're lighting candles for a spell or a spot of meditation, stick to soy or beeswax varieties. Candles made from paraffin wax - the kind most often found in the shops - can give off poisonous fumes such as benzene, says a report published at the American Chemical Society annual conference. 'An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions are not likely to affect you,' said Dr Amid Hamidi, co-author of the study by South Carolina State University. 'But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years, or lighting them frequently in an unventilated bathroom -around a tub, for example - may cause problems.'
